In retro news, I’m lighting a 16-candle cake for Prototype, a super-anti-hero sandboxer. I can vividly recall the first time I slipped into the leather hoodie of Alex Mercer, an amnesiac with a bad attitude and worse mutations. Also, it’s tough to forget a protagonist who had a penchant for karate-kicking helicopter gunships.
Radical Entertainment’s take on Manhattan was crawling with military goons and grotesque infected, and we could shapeshift into all manner of weaponry. I’m talking clawed arms for slicing mobs to ribbons, a giant blade that could cleave tanks in half, and tendrils that whipped enemies into buildings. He could also glide across rooftops, sprint up skyscrapers, and elbow-drop from 20 storeys up like a plague-powered missile. Top gameplay that holds up pretty well today.
