Watch Kermit the Frog’s University of Maryland Commencement Speech

“Life is not a solo act. It’s a big, messy, delightful ensemble piece, especially when you are with your people,” beloved Muppet says at Jim Henson’s alma mater

As promised, Kermit the Frog served as the commencement speaker for the University of Maryland’s 2025 graduation ceremony, with “the World’s Most Famous Frog” dispensing wisdom and jokes at late Muppets creator Jim Henson’s alma mater.

“As I look out at you students, I can tell you all worked your tails off,” Kermit told the Class of 2025. “And as a former tadpole, believe me, losing your tail is a pretty big deal.”

“As you prepare to take this big leap into real life, here’s a little advice — if you’re willing to listen to a frog,” the beloved Muppet added. “Rather than jumping over someone to get what you want, consider reaching out your hand and taking the leap side by side, because life is better when we leap together.”

Kermit the Frog was revealed as the Terrapins’ commencement speaker in March. As noted in Kermit’s speech, Jim Henson (who “had a hand in literally everything I did,” the Muppet quipped) was a graduate of the University of Maryland in 1960, majoring in home economics before embarking on a legacy in puppetry. A bronze sculpture of Kermit and Henson is also a popular landmark on Maryland’s campus.
